Top Outdoor Recreational Activities in the Florida Keys

Key West, the Lower Keys, Matecumbe Key they are all beautiful areas of the Florida Keys which offer a wealth of outdoor recreational activities for the vacationer or outdoor enthusiast.  The beautiful Florida sun, the crystal clear waters of the Gulf and the inviting and relaxed atmosphere of the Florida Keys make this area of Florida simply a vacationer’s paradise.

The most common outdoor recreational activities in the Florida Keys include fishing, boating, diving, kayaking, sailing and simply relaxing in the Florida sun.  If you’re planning a trip to the Florida Keys, here’s a look at just a few of the exciting outdoor recreational activities that you may be interested in taking the time to enjoy during your stay.

Fishing

Game fishing, spear fishing, hunting for spiny lobster, these are all popular pass times for the residents of the Florida Keys as well as for those who visit.  The area is surrounded by warm coastal waters which make for primetime fishing and recreational fun.  Fishing in the Florida Keys may lead you to the elusive Goliath Grouper, Redfish, Snapper, and a wealth of other delightful creatures of the deep.  Much of the water near the coast is quite shallow so you can even do some sight fishing—if you so wish.

Boating

One of the most popular past times in the Florida Keys is boating.  In an area where there are houses that are only accessible by boats, let’s just say that boating is a must in the area.  While you may be able to get where you want to go by car or truck, you’ll have a much better time traveling around the Florida Keys by boat.  The waters are simply pristine and the scenic views are picturesque.

Diving

Off the coast of the Florida Keys, many enjoy taking a dive.  One of the top recreational activities in the Florida Keys and another popular past time of both locals and visitors alike is diving the shipwrecks and coral reefs that are located just a short boat ride off the coast of any one of the Florida Keys.  Diving in the Keys is like nowhere else in the world—offering a wealth of underwater nature excitement including thousands of species of fish, sharks, corals and plant life.

Kayaking

Kayaking along the shores is a relaxing experience to be had in the Florida Keys.  Kayak rentals are available at most marinas and even some hotels for the use of those visiting the area.  Kayaks are a great way to get up close and personal with the natural scenic views of the Florida Keys—and you can fish off a kayak too!

Sailing

At the end of the day, why not take a nice sunset sail along beautiful coastal Florida?  The sun slowly dips across the west and the Florida Keys show their natural beauty.  For the avid outdoor enthusiast, the Florida Keys really do offer outdoor recreational activities that are suitable for just about anyone!

Brief Explanations of Several Different Forms of Alternative Energy

If you are interested in the green energy revolution, then you probably want to learn how each of the methods of green energy work. While you can spend a lifetime learning the technical explanations and nuances of how the forms of green energy work, most people just need a general explanation of how they work so that they can visualize them. If this kind of brief explanation is what you are looking for, then you should read the following article to get the simple explanations of some of the major forms of renewable energy.

Tidal Power. Have you ever heard of such a thing? Tidal power uses the ebb and flow of the oceans in order to generate electricity. This is accomplished by constructing large structures off the coast in areas where there is significant tidal movement. These structures are composed of static portions that are based on the sea floor. There is a second moving portion that floats and moves up and down on the fixed portion. This movement, up and down, is what generates electricity. Though the structures only move up and down twice per day, the huge scale of their movement against massive current generates a lot of electricity. Though there is some controversy by people who feel this is unsightly off the coast, it may be a great way to generate green energy in the future.

You have probably heard of solar energy composed of photo voltaic panels that create electricity when photons of light strike the surface, however, solar power is being used in another more unconventional manner. Large arrays of mirrors are being placed around a giant water tower. The mirrors reflect the sun's rays to strike the water tower. When enough mirrors are reflecting light towards the water tower, the temperature of the water in the tower approaches boiling. Once the water starts to boil, the steam is used to power steam turbines. This is the same process that most coal and nuclear power plants use to drive turbines, except that the temperature is controlled not by fires or nuclear reaction, but by the focusing of sun's rays. This is a completely green energy source and may see more wide use in the future.

These unconventional sources of energy all involve some kind of turbine. Just like traditional methods, but they are deriving their initial energy input in a different manner other than fossil fuels. While they may be less scale able, these forms of energy will decrease our dependence on coal and oil.

Hopefully this article has provided you with the simple explanations you need to garner a basic understanding of the various forms of green energy. Now that you have a basic understanding, you can choose to do further research on the types of green energy that you are most interested. There are many more forms of green energy for you to explore. Good luck in your quest to understand green energy and to hopefully incorporate it in your future life.
